You must have a current licensure, 2000 hours of specialty experience, and recent employment in the specialty to qualify.
One of the most important skills that you must have as a triage nurse is the ability to communicate effectively. Remember, you're going to be on the phone with patients in order to evaluation their situation and determine the seriousness of their ailment. In order to do so, you must have strong communication skills. You'll also need to be able to handle stressful situations well, and make decisions on your own. People are calling to get advice in regards to a medical decision. You have to be able to quickly judge how serious the matter is, and tell them to take the appropriate actions.
Don't think that just because you're a part of a medical answering service instead of working in the hospital it won't be busy. You can and most likely will be receiving calls for more than one physician or practice. Not only that, but depending on your shift, you may be receiving them at a time when nobody else is available. This ensures a steady amount of work.
